The concept of Yard Dog Trialling in Australia was established by Lance Clifford of Pyengana in August, 1980 . Lance organised the very first trial in the Saleyards at St. Helens with a small group of dedicated trialers, some of these trialers are still trialling today.

Following on from the first trial, the Inaugural Meeeting of the Australian Yard Dog Association was held in Launceston on 15th September, 1981 . The meeting was attended by several trialers and sponsors, who supported Lance in his endeavours to establish the sport of yard dog trialling.

The first Australian Yard Dog Championships was held in conjunction with Launceston Show in October, 1981 and today the Australian Yard Dog Championships are held annually on a rotational basis throughout Australia.

Following Lance’s initial vision , the sport has now become very popular and competitive throughout all Australian states drawing large crowd interest at shows, field days, rodeos, gymkanas, festivals and fund raising events. Lance still maintains an active interest in the Association and competes in trialing.

Yard Dog Trialing has gone through many changes since inception and has many dedicated triallers. The professionalism shown by the current day handlers means the sport is in good hands.

Yard Dog Trialling offers interested like minded people the opportunity to be competitive but also to make great friendships and have an enjoyable time !
